This is such a crazy story!! The pictures at the end are unbelievable!
Hit by a car traveling at 75mph, he was embedded in the fender and rode on for another 600 miles – and SURVIVED!
When a brother and sister struck a coyote at 75mph, they assumed they had killed the animal and just kept driving. What they didn’t realize was that they had hit the toughest creature ever to survive a hit-and-run.
Eight hours, two fuel stops, and 600 miles later they found the wild animal embedded in their front fender – very much alive!!
Daniel and Tevyn East were driving at night along Interstate 80 near the Nevada-Utah border when they noticed a pack of coyotes near the roadside on October 12. One of the animals ran right smack in front of the car before they could even hit the brakes.
The impact sounded so fatal that the young siblings just figured there was no point in stopping, and just kept on driving – as the clueless do . until they reached their destination where they were able to assess the damage from the impact.
“Right off the bat, we knew it was bad,” Daniel explained. “We thought that was the end of story. Period.”
After the incident around 1:00 AM, they continued their 600 mile trek to North San Juan – even stopping to fuel up at least two times. When they finally pulled into their destination at 9:00 AM, they took time to examine what the extent of the damage was that they must have sustained from the impact.
At first it looked as though it was going to be quite gruesome. Daniel could see what looked like mangled fur with the body protruding from inside the grill. Tevyn said that she was doing her best to keep some distance from the whole gory mess. They knew they were looking at the remains of part of the coyote. It didn’t register they were actually looking at the whole animal.
Daniel got out a broom and began to try to pry the mess out from the bumper. It was then that he got the shock of his life! The remains actually “flinched!!” Tevyn East said, ‘It was a huge surprise. I actually got a little freaked out! I mean, that was really weird!”
“We knew it was bad” said Tevyn East, who was in the car when it hit the coyote, bends down to take a look at the fur poking through the fender.
What Mr. East spotted as he bent down to inspect the damage to his car – the body of the coyote poking out through the radiator
Wily coyote: The animal’s head can be seen as rescuers took apart the front fender to save it after it was struck by the car at 75mph
Miracle escape: As the animal struggled, wildlife protection officials put a loop around its neck to prevent it from further injuring itself. The front of the car is completely taken apart as the coyote begins to wriggle free
And voila! “Tricky”, the toughest coyote ever, rests in a cage after his nightmarish ordeal.
Amazingly, after somehow surviving this miraculous voyage, the only injuries found on Tricky were a few lacerations and abrasions to its front legs and paws. While figuring out where to release this courageous animal, Jan kept it in a kennel in her yard. However, on Thursday, as she was arranging for its release, Tricky managed to escape by getting under the bottom bar of the cage and ran off to its ultimate freedom.
A tricky coyote indeed.
